Himanta Biswa Sarma was sworn in on Tuesday, 12 May for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister of Assam, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) retaining power in the state for a third straight term. The swearing-in ceremony in Guwahati was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, among other NDA leaders.

Gujarat Leaders Extend Congratulations

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel congratulated Sarma through a post on social media platform X, saying: "Heartiest congratulations and best wishes for a successful tenure to Himanta Biswa Sarma on taking oath again as the Chief Minister of Assam and to all the public representatives taking oath as ministers."

Patel added that under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, "Assam will set new benchmarks in development, good governance and public welfare," and that the BJP's "double-engine government" would further accelerate the state's progress.

Gujarat Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghavi also offered his congratulations, stating that Sarma's leadership had contributed to a "new era of growth and confidence" in Assam. "From accelerating infrastructure to empowering every section of society, your visionary leadership continues to script a new era of growth and confidence for Assam," Sanghavi said.

NDA's Commanding Election Victory

The NDA secured 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly, with the BJP alone winning 82 seats. Allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People's Front (BPF) won 10 seats each, consolidating the alliance's grip on power. Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the BJP-led NDA legislature party following the alliance's decisive electoral victory.

New Council of Ministers

Several ministers were also sworn in alongside Sarma as part of the new council, including Ajanta Neog, Ranjeet Kumar Dass, Rameswar Teli, Atul Bora, and Charan Boro. Sarma, who first assumed the office of Chief Minister in 2021, now begins his second consecutive term at the helm of the state.

The NDA's third consecutive win in Assam underscores the BJP's consolidation of the Northeast, a region that has seen a significant political realignment over the past decade. The presence of top Union ministers at the swearing-in ceremony signals the Centre's continued investment in the state's political and developmental trajectory.
