The victim, identified as 25-year-old Mithun Sarkar, tragically succumbed to the circumstances of this horrifying event, which took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Chakgori area of the upazila.
As reported by the Bengali newspaper Daily Manobkantha, Mithun was pursued by a local mob over allegations of robbery.
In a frantic bid to escape, he jumped into a nearby deep canal, where the powerful current took him away.
Local authorities, including a team from the Mohadevpur Police Station, the Fire Service, and Civil Defence, were dispatched promptly after receiving the alert and initiated a rescue operation.
Despite their efforts, after several hours of searching, the Fire Service diving team retrieved Mithun from the water, but he was already deceased.
Confirming the incident, Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shahidul Islam of Mohadevpur Police Station stated, "Initial investigations indicate that the young man jumped into the canal while being chased under suspicion of theft. We recovered his body with assistance from the fire service. A thorough investigation is underway, and appropriate legal actions will follow post-autopsy."
This incident marks the seventh case in just 19 days and the third within the current week, showcasing a troubling increase in violence targeting Hindu communities across Bangladesh.
Previously, on Monday, two Hindu men were murdered in separate incidents within a mere 24 hours in Bangladesh.
The first victim, 40-year-old Sarat Chakraborty Mani, was brutally attacked by sharp weapons in Narsingdi district on Monday night, allegedly by an extremist armed group.
In another incident, a Hindu businessman, 38-year-old Rana Pratap Bairagi, was shot dead in public in Monirampur Upazila of Jashore district.
Earlier, on Saturday, another Hindu individual, Khokon Chandra Das, lost his life after being ruthlessly assaulted by a mob in Damudya Upazila of Shariatpur district.
Last week witnessed the death of 40-year-old Bajendra Biswas, who was shot dead by a colleague in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district.
On December 24 of the previous year, media reports indicated the lynching of another Hindu youth, 29-year-old Amrit Mondal, in the Hossaindanga area of Kalimohar Union.
Moreover, on December 18 of last year, 25-year-old Dipu Chandra Das was brutally murdered in a mob lynching incident due to false blasphemy charges leveled by a Muslim coworker at his factory in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh. The mob hung Das' body from a tree before setting it ablaze.
