Dhaka, March 9 (NationPress) In a deeply troubling incident highlighting the ongoing violence against minority groups in Bangladesh, a young Hindu boy tragically lost his life after being struck by a vehicle during a robbery attempt, as reported by local media on Monday.
The incident took place on Sunday evening in the Lalpol area of Feni district along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. The victim, identified as 16-year-old Shanto Kumar Saha, was violently thrown onto the road by the assailants, where he was hit by a passing vehicle, resulting in his immediate death.
According to relatives and eyewitness accounts, the Bangladeshi Bengali news outlet 'Jagonews24' reported that Shanto was waiting in his autorickshaw, managing a passenger's items near the Miyaji filling station when the robbery unfolded. About half an hour later, the unidentified attackers assaulted him, beating him and forcing him under a culvert while attempting to steal his vehicle.
Upon regaining his footing, Shanto pursued the robbers, only to be shoved onto the highway, where he was fatally struck by a vehicle.
Feni Additional Superintendent of Police Nishat Tabassum confirmed the incident, stating, "Police arrived at the scene after receiving information, recovered the body, and transported it to the Feni General Hospital mortuary."
"In the evening, when his family couldn't contact him, they initiated a search. Eventually, after learning from a familiar autorickshaw driver, we discovered Shanto's body. By analyzing the CCTV footage from the location where he had picked up passengers, we may identify the kidnappers," reported Shanto's cousin, Nipul Das.
Shanto's cousin, Nipa Rani Das, recounted, “I saw Shanto in front of the Miyaji filling station just before Iftar. When I asked him to take me home, he mentioned he had a passenger to pick up. At that moment, there were several sacks in his autorickshaw and a man standing next to him. I believe they targeted Shanto, exploiting the calmness during Iftar to hijack the autorickshaw.”
