Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 13 (NationPress) Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday raised alarms regarding the troubling circumstances in Bangladesh, where the Hindu population has faced violent assaults. He affirmed that the Indian government is committed to supporting minority Hindu citizens in the neighboring nation.
While participating in a governmental event in the Sribhumi district, which shares an extensive border with Bangladesh, CM Sarma addressed the media, stating, “We are deeply troubled by the fact that the Hindu community is undergoing frequent attacks in Bangladesh, and it is our ethical responsibility to stand in solidarity with the minority groups in that country and shield them from any unwarranted situation. The central government is aware of the situation, and our state government is on high alert.”
He also acknowledged that the unrest in Bangladesh has repercussions in Assam, prompting the state government to enhance security measures in areas near the international border.
CM Sarma indicated that the Assam government plans to urge the Union government to take necessary actions to guarantee the safety of the Hindu community in Bangladesh. “While foreign relations are primarily within the realm of the Central government, we can request attention towards the Hindu individuals who have been victims of violence in Bangladesh. The recent occurrences are utterly condemnable,” he stated.
Previously, the CM remarked that developments beyond the international line cannot be disregarded, especially as violence and instability seem to be escalating. “What is unfolding in Bangladesh is a matter of grave concern for us. Reports indicate an increase in the torture and harassment of Hindus, which could also affect Assam,” he emphasized, underlining the necessity for heightened vigilance.
Citing the recent political and social turmoil in the neighboring nation, CM Sarma pointed out that episodes of mob violence and targeted assaults against minority communities have surged in recent weeks. He stressed that both the Assam government and security forces must remain vigilant and continuously oversee the situation to avert any spillover into the state.
“At this juncture, we must exercise caution and closely monitor the developments across the border. Simultaneously, it is crucial to extend moral support and assurance to the Hindu community in Bangladesh,” he added.
According to the 2022 census, approximately 13.13 million Hindus reside in Bangladesh, making up nearly 8% of the country's total population. CM Sarma's statements arise amidst escalating concerns regarding the safety of minority communities in Bangladesh.
