Key Takeaways
Guwahati, Jan 7 (NationPress) Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma raised alarms on Wednesday regarding the swiftly changing dynamics in neighboring Bangladesh, cautioning that the escalating instability and violence there could significantly affect Assam due to its sensitive geographical and geopolitical context.
During a press briefing, Sarma emphasized that developments across the international border should not be viewed in isolation, especially as incidents of violence and insecurity seem to be on the rise. He expressed deep concern over reports indicating a surge in attacks targeting the Hindu community in Bangladesh, labeling the situation as profoundly troubling from a regional security viewpoint.
“What is transpiring in Bangladesh is a serious issue for us. Reports of the suffering and oppression of Hindus are on the rise, and such occurrences could directly influence Assam as well,” the Chief Minister stated, emphasizing the necessity for increased awareness and vigilance.
Addressing recent political and social changes in the neighboring nation, Sarma noted that mob violence and targeted attacks against minority groups have escalated in recent weeks.
He underscored the importance of the Assam government and security forces remaining vigilant and actively monitoring the situation to mitigate any potential spillover effects into the state. “At this moment, we need to exercise caution and keep a close watch on developments across the border. It is equally important to provide moral support and reassurance to the Hindu community in Bangladesh,” he added.
According to census data from 2022, Bangladesh is home to approximately 13.13 million Hindus, representing nearly eight percent of the total population.
Sarma’s comments arise amid increasing regional concerns regarding the safety and security of minority communities in Bangladesh.
The Chief Minister also highlighted internal security issues within Assam, asserting that extremist elements continue to pose a threat. He pointed out that security agencies have consistently uncovered evidence of such activities over the past decade.
“It is undeniable that jihadi elements have existed in Assam, and we have received proof of this repeatedly. Some may still be lurking, possibly as sleeper cells,” Sarma remarked.
Highlighting Assam’s strategic and sensitive location, the Chief Minister conveyed that the state has long been challenged by cross-border and internal security issues. He stressed that persistent vigilance, robust intelligence networks, and proactive security strategies are essential for ensuring peace and stability in the region.
