Shillong, June 12 (NationPress) The Meghalaya Police are set to transport all five suspects involved in the Raja Raghuvanshi murder case to the crime scene located in the Sohra-Cherrapunji region of the East Khasi Hills district next week for a reconstruction of the events surrounding the murder, officials disclosed on Thursday.
Superintendent of Police for East Khasi Hills, Vivek Syiem, indicated that the police are currently conducting interrogations of the five suspects to uncover the facts behind this shocking crime.
“Following three to four days of questioning, we will escort all five suspects to the Sohra-Cherrapunji area to recreate the incident. This is an integral part of our investigation,” Syiem told IANS.
He mentioned that the police would file charge sheets against the suspects in court at the earliest.
Additionally, the Superintendent stated that he cannot disclose details regarding the confessions of the five accused, which includes Raja’s wife, Sonam Raghuvanshi.
On Thursday, Davis N.R. Marak, Deputy Inspector General of the Eastern Range, revealed that two of the suspects in the murder case—Sonam Raghuvanshi, 24, and her alleged lover Raj Singh Kushwaha—have confessed to participating in the conspiracy.
“They have acknowledged their involvement in the conspiracy,” the DIG stated to the media.
Marak elaborated that the suspects are being interrogated separately for the time being, with joint questioning planned for later.
“Kushwaha claims that Sonam is the mastermind, while Sonam accuses Raj. We will continue our interrogations until their statements converge. Identifying the true mastermind is pivotal for understanding the motive behind the murder,” the DIG explained, adding that the interrogation will conclude only when they are assured that all five suspects are disclosing the truth.
Alongside Sonam and Raj Singh Kushwaha, 21, who is allegedly the mastermind, the other suspects include Anand Singh Kurmi, 23, Akash Rajput, 19, and Vishal Singh Chauhan, 22.
All five suspects in this shocking murder case were presented before the district and session court in Shillong on Wednesday, ten days after the body of Raja Raghuvanshi was discovered on June 2, from a profound gorge beneath the Wei Sawdong parking area at Riat Arliang in Sohra, which sent shockwaves throughout the nation. The court has placed all five suspects under police custody for eight days.
Following the discovery of the body on June 2, the Meghalaya Police established Special Investigation Teams and initiated ‘Operation Honeymoon’, deploying several teams to Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, successfully apprehending the five suspects with assistance from law enforcement in those states.
Sonam purportedly masterminded the murder of her husband during their honeymoon in the Sohra-Cherrapunji region of the East Khasi Hills district. After her husband's body was found, she surrendered to the police in Ghazipur, Uttar Pradesh on June 7 and was subsequently transported to Shillong late Tuesday night. The remaining four suspects were also brought to Shillong on Wednesday.
Sonam and Raja Raghuvanshi were married on May 11, just nine days before arriving in Meghalaya. On May 23, the newlyweds went missing in the Sohra-Cherrapunji region, prompting a frantic search operation by the Meghalaya Police, the National Disaster Response Force, local citizens, and other agencies. The murder was uncovered after locals discovered an abandoned motorcycle that the couple had rented from Shillong at Sohrarim village between Shillong and Sohra Road.
