Hyderabad Police Launches Bold Initiative for a Drug-Free City
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, April 17 (NationPress) Robust initiatives are underway to reshape Hyderabad into a drug-free metropolis, announced Police Commissioner V. C. Sajjanar on Friday.
The city’s top cop visited the De-addiction Centre at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad, where he engaged directly with rowdy-sheeters who had recently tested positive for drugs during assessments by the Task Force police.
He inquired about their health and the measures they are implementing to combat their addiction. He also spoke with the families of these individuals, urging them to offer emotional support and encouragement.
Following this, he convened a meeting with medical professionals to evaluate the counselling process and treatments being provided.
During his address, the Commissioner highlighted that surveillance is being enforced on the movements of rowdy-sheeters, who are considered a threat to public order. As part of this strategy, drug tests were conducted on 239 rowdy-sheeters, with 188 testing positive.
Currently, 35 individuals are receiving treatment at the Gandhi De-addiction Centre, while others are being counselled at various facilities. He expressed optimism that the specialized 15-day counselling and treatment program, which began a week ago, would lead to significant positive changes.
Moreover, he revealed that advanced drug detection kits have been distributed to all police stations throughout the city. Field officials have been instructed to rigorously conduct drug tests on individuals perceived as suspicious, particularly targeting the youth during nighttime.
The Commissioner praised the establishment of 35 de-addiction centres statewide, a venture inspired by EAGLE Force director Sandeep Shandilya, branding it a model for the entire nation.
He affirmed that these centres would facilitate the recovery of numerous individuals grappling with substance abuse.
While assisting victims in overcoming addiction, the police will also take stringent actions against drug peddlers. Legal actions will be initiated against those identified, with history sheets opened against the accused.
He commended the impressive performance of the Hyderabad-Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) in curbing drug-related activities in the city. He urged the community and volunteer organizations to collaborate with the police in the unified effort to eliminate the drug crisis.
