Kuwait City, Dec 9 (NationPress) The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sarthak docked at Kuwait's Shuwaikh Port on Tuesday, receiving a warm reception from enthusiastic school children waving the Indian tricolour.
The Indian Embassy in Kuwait highlighted that the ICGS Sarthak's five-day goodwill visit signifies a pivotal moment in strengthening defense, security, and maritime cooperation between the two countries.
In a post on X, the embassy remarked, "The Indian Coast Guard Ship (ICGS) Sarthak has arrived in Kuwait. The vessel made its entrance into Shuwaikh Port today as part of a five-day goodwill mission."
The arrival of ICGS Sarthak was met with excitement as school children waved the Indian tricolour, welcoming the crew with joy. This visit symbolizes a significant step forward in the defense and security relations between India and Kuwait under the umbrella of their expanding Strategic Partnership, underscoring a mutual commitment to regional security and a lasting friendship.
Earlier in August, both nations conducted the seventh round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi to evaluate their bilateral relations. Officials from India and Kuwait discussed ongoing initiatives and opportunities to enhance their strategic partnership across various domains, such as political, trade, investment, defense, energy, culture, and people-to-people interactions.
Aseem Mahajan, Additional Secretary (Gulf) at the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), and Ambassador Sameeh Essa Johar Hayat, Assistant Foreign Minister for Asia Affairs at Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, co-led the consultations.
The MEA stated, "During the meeting, both parties undertook a thorough review of bilateral relations and shared perspectives on regional and global matters of mutual concern. They explored various ongoing initiatives and strategies to deepen their strategic partnership in multiple sectors, including political, trade, investment, defense, energy, culture, and people-to-people interactions."
The two nations will persist in collaborating on the execution of the roadmap outlined under the leadership of both countries during Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi's visit to Kuwait in December 2024. It was also decided to convene the meetings of the Joint Working Groups (JWGs) under the Joint Commission for Cooperation (JCC) at mutually agreeable dates, as soon as possible.
India was one of the first nations to establish diplomatic relations with Kuwait post-independence in 1961. Before official diplomatic ties were established, India was represented by a Trade Commissioner. The bilateral relationship was elevated to a ‘Strategic Partnership’ during PM Modi's visit to Kuwait in 2024.
The MEA noted, "India and Kuwait enjoy a profound historical connection. Bilateral trade stands at USD 10.2 billion annually for FY 2024-2025. The presence of over one million Indians in Kuwait exemplifies the robust people-to-people ties between our nations."
