Tehran, Dec 17 (NationPress) The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) Ship Sarthak, an Offshore Patrol Vessel, has made a significant entry into the strategic port of Chabahar, Iran, as part of its ongoing overseas deployment to Gulf nations, officials announced on Wednesday.
The vessel arrived at this crucial port on Tuesday and is scheduled to remain there until December 19.
Chabahar, situated on the northern coast of the Gulf of Oman, is a strategically positioned deep-water port that provides India with a direct maritime route to Iran, the landlocked Afghanistan, and Central Asia, offering a shorter and geopolitically independent alternative compared to routes passing through Pakistan.
This connectivity facilitates New Delhi in enhancing trade and transit connections, including links to the International North–South Transport Corridor.
“This historic visit marks the inaugural entry of an ICG Ship into the port of Chabahar, emphasizing India’s increasing maritime involvement in the region and bolstering New Delhi’s capability to project economic influence, secure supply routes to Afghanistan and Central Asia, and offer a competitive development model in the area, in line with India’s SAGAR & MAHASAGAR vision of secure and cooperative maritime engagements,” stated Commandant Amit Uniyal, PRO, ICG.
During its stay, ICG Ship Sarthak will take part in various professional and community-oriented initiatives alongside the Iranian Navy and other maritime agencies of Iran.
Activities will include courtesy visits and professional exchanges, designed to strengthen institutional ties and improve mutual comprehension regarding maritime safety and security.
Key features of this port visit include cooperative training exercises focusing on Maritime Search and Rescue (SAR), Maritime Law Enforcement (MLE), and Marine Pollution Response (MPR).
“A marine pollution response demonstration will be held in Chabahar harbor, targeting oil spills and Hazardous and Noxious Substances (HNS) spills to illustrate coordinated response mechanisms,” the official added.
“Coordination drills between MRCCs, a table-top exercise, and joint Visit, Board, Search and Seizure (VBSS) drills will further enhance the operational readiness and interoperability between the two nations,” he further explained.
In addition to these professional engagements, the visit will include sports events and a beach walkathon, featuring participation from the National Cadet Corps (NCC) cadets, in alignment with the national Puneet Sagar Abhiyan aimed at promoting marine environmental awareness and coastal cleanliness.
The port call in Chabahar follows the ship’s earlier visit to Kuwait, where ICG Ship Sarthak effectively interacted with the Kuwait Coast Guard, further showcasing the Indian Coast Guard’s expanding presence and constructive engagement with regional maritime partners.
This groundbreaking visit of the ICG Ship Sarthak to Chabahar signifies India’s dedication to enhancing maritime cooperation, advocating for a rules-based maritime framework, and contributing to peace, stability, and sustainable development throughout the broader Indian Ocean Region and the Gulf.
