Kolkata, Feb 10 (NationPress) A Bangladeshi national illegally infiltrating India was apprehended on Monday with forged Indian identity documents close to the office of Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim within the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) premises.

The individual has been identified as Rafiqul Islam. Authorities recovered several counterfeit Indian documents from him, including birth certificates, AADHAR card, and a fake Indian passport.

Reports indicate that Islam was observed by undercover officers stationed at KMC, wandering around various sections of the corporation, including the mayor's office.

When confronted by the officers, Islam claimed to be a resident of Chapra in the Nadia district and stated he was there for document verification.

This explanation raised suspicions among the officers about the necessity of his presence at KMC for verification, leading to his detention and subsequent questioning.

Under interrogation, Islam confessed that he is originally from Bangladesh and illegally crossed the border into India. He revealed that he initially procured fake AADHAR and EPIC cards in Kolkata, which he later used to obtain a counterfeit Indian passport.

This arrest occurred less than two days after police from Hanskhali, another area in the Nadia district, apprehended four illegal Bangladeshi infiltrators and their Indian accomplice late Saturday.

Those four infiltrators had entered India illegally a few months ago and were attempting to return to Bangladesh.

In recent months, both Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police have dismantled numerous networks involved in providing fake Indian identity documents, including passports, to illegal Bangladeshi nationals, resulting in multiple arrests.

Investigators have noted a specific pattern in how these networks operate. Infiltrators who cross into Indian territory connect with local agents and agree to pay significant sums for counterfeit documents. They are first given shelter in various villages near the Bangladesh border, both on land and coastal.

Following this, agents arrange fake ration cards, which serve as the initial step for obtaining other identity documents. With these ration cards, they can then acquire other identification papers like EPIC, PAN, and AADHAR cards, ultimately allowing them to secure fake passports based on these documents.
