Hisor (Tajikistan), Sep 4 (NationPress) - India faced a draw against Afghanistan in their final Group B encounter at the CAFA Nations Cup 2025, held at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan, on Thursday. Anwar Ali earned the title of Player of the Match.

With a total of four points from three matches, the Blue Tigers now look to the outcome of the game between IR Iran and Tajikistan to determine their fate in the tournament. Although finishing at the top of the group is out of reach, they could still secure a second-place finish, which would grant them a spot in the third-place match scheduled for September 8, provided Tajikistan does not win against Iran.

The match commenced with Afghanistan taking an early initiative, but India countered with more clear opportunities in the first half. Shortly past the 15-minute mark, Ashique Kuruniyan made a breakthrough on the left and delivered a pass to Irfan Yadwad, who unfortunately missed the target.

India's goalkeeper, Gurpreet Singh Sandhu, showcased his skills in the 24th minute with a commendable save against a long-range shot from Ali Reza Panahi. Just minutes later, Yadwad found himself in the Afghanistan box but failed to convert his chance, shooting wide.

Ashique continued to press in the 34th minute, stealing the ball from Afghanistan's centre-back Mahboob Hanifi, but his shot was thwarted by goalkeeper Faisal Ahmad Hamidi, leading to a booking for Ashique after their collision.

Newcomer Jithin MS, who made his first start for India, attempted to create opportunities, but his efforts were either blocked or went just over the bar as the first half concluded.

Post half-time, Coach Khalid Jamil made tactical changes, bringing on Manvir Singh (Jr) and Vikram Partap Singh, which allowed India to control the game better.

As the second half progressed, the first significant chance arose around the hour mark, but Jithin narrowly missed connecting with a through ball. Jithin had another shot go over the bar in the 66th minute after a long throw from Uvais.

Afghanistan nearly broke the deadlock in the 71st minute when Hossein Zamani set up Yama Sherzad, whose effort was magnificently tipped onto the crossbar by Sandhu.

In the closing stages, the Lions of Khorasan gained momentum, yet the Blue Tigers held firm to secure the tie.
