New Delhi, Sep 6 (NationPress) The Indian men's football team is set to battle Oman in the third-place playoff of the CAFA Nations Cup 2025 at the Hisor Central Stadium in Tajikistan on Monday.
Oman, having concluded the group stage as runners-up in Group A behind Uzbekistan, aims to finish their campaign strongly while remaining unbeaten in the tournament. Meanwhile, Uzbekistan is scheduled to clash with Iran, the leaders of Group B, in the final.
The Blue Tigers advanced to the third-place face-off following a goalless draw against Afghanistan in their last group encounter on Thursday. Their spot in this match was solidified after a later 2-2 draw between Iran and Tajikistan, according to the ISL website.
Coached by Khalid Jamil, the Indian team ended the group stage with four points from three matches, which included one win, one draw, and one loss. Iran topped the group with seven points, while the hosts, Tajikistan, also finished with four points but were surpassed by India based on the head-to-head rule due to India’s 2-1 victory in their opening match. Afghanistan exited the tournament with just one point, without a win.
This playoff offers Jamil’s squad an opportunity to secure a podium finish, while Oman seeks to sustain their unbeaten streak and conclude the tournament on a high note.
On Friday, the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and FC Goa announced that Indian defender Sandesh Jhingan sustained a cheekbone fracture during India’s match against Iran.
Jhingan incurred the injury in the first half of the match, which India lost 0-3, but he played the entire 90 minutes, demonstrating his resilience for the Men in Blue. He has since been ruled out of the remaining matches of the CAFA Cup and returned to India on Wednesday.
