New Delhi, Dec 5 (NationPress) The Union Minister for Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Shivraj Singh Chouhan, met with his Russian counterpart, Oxana Lut, where they deliberated on ongoing collaborations and identified future areas of partnership, as stated in an official release on Friday.
Both nations have committed to enhancing their cooperation in agricultural trade, fertilizers, seeds, market access, and joint research, reaffirming their dedication to promoting innovation that will benefit farmers in both countries.
Chouhan pointed out that the bilateral agricultural trade has grown significantly, currently valued at approximately $3.5 billion. He stressed the importance of achieving a more balanced trade and expressed gratitude towards Russia for addressing long-standing concerns regarding the export of Indian potatoes, pomegranates, and seeds.
Lut expressed a strong interest in enhancing trade and fortifying collaboration in the agricultural sector.
To further agricultural commodity trade, both parties explored options for exporting food grains and horticultural products from India.
During their meeting at the Krishi Bhawan on Thursday, the ministers noted that the India-Russia partnership is built on trust, friendship, and mutual cooperation.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the ICAR and Russia's Federal Center for Animal Health to enhance collaboration in agricultural research, innovation, and capacity building.
Chouhan also extended an invitation to the Russian delegation to participate in the upcoming BRICS Agriculture Ministers’ meeting that India will host next year.
The Russian delegation included Deputy Ministers Maxim Markovich and Marina Afonina, FSVPS head Sergey Dankvert, and Director Asia Division Daria Koroleva, among others.
The Indian side comprised Agriculture & Farmers Welfare Secretary Devesh Chaturvedi, DARE Secretary M. L. Jat, Fertiliser Secretary Rajat Kumar Mishra, representatives from the Ministry of External Affairs, Joint Secretaries from the Department of Agriculture, and other senior officials.
