India Set to Emerge as a Dominant Maritime Force: PM Modi

New Delhi, Dec 11 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that with its advantageous position in the Indian Ocean and a rich history of trade and cultural interactions, India is on the verge of becoming a global hub and a prominent maritime player.
In his special address at the India Maritime Heritage Conclave, PM Modi remarked, “As we progress towards realizing the vision of a Viksit Bharat by 2047, enhancing our maritime framework for the 21st century is essential to our mission.”
“I am confident that the discussions during the Conclave will not only allow India to celebrate its rich maritime heritage but also to formulate a forward-looking blueprint that positions it as a global hub and a leading maritime player,” he added.
He pointed out that the establishment of the National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal, alongside initiatives like the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor during the G20, exemplifies India’s expanding role in international maritime affairs. The Conclave serves as a platform to honor this heritage while outlining a pathway to achieving India’s ambition of becoming a leading maritime hub by 2047.
“From spices to beads, jewelry, cotton, and the richness of our culture, the flourishing sea routes acted as conduits for commercial and intellectual exchanges,” PM Modi stated.
During the inauguration of the conclave, Sarbananda Sonowal, the Union Minister for Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, underscored India’s dedication to safeguarding and promoting its maritime heritage.
Discussing the importance of this initiative, Sonowal said, “Our vibrant maritime heritage is not just a tale of our past but a guiding light for our future. This conclave reinforces India’s position in maritime innovation and conservation, promoting sustainable practices while safeguarding our cultural legacy for future generations.”
“The National Maritime Heritage Complex at Lothal is a step towards that goal, a venue where we will bring our maritime history to life for generations to come. It will celebrate the ingenuity of our ancestors while encouraging young minds to uphold their legacy,” he added.
The conclave saw participation from four state ministers representing Goa, Arunachal Pradesh, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. The event also marked the first meeting of the Apex Committee for the establishment of the National Maritime Heritage Conclave. An exhibition with over 20 stalls showcased India's shipbuilding techniques, navigation systems, and historical trade routes, inaugurated by esteemed dignitaries.
The India Maritime Heritage Conclave promotes collaboration with vital ministries such as Labour and Employment, Youth Affairs and Education, and Culture and Tourism, emphasizing opportunities for skill development and employment, aligning with the Labour Ministry’s objectives of creating sustainable livelihoods.
Additionally, it encourages youth to consider maritime careers and weaves heritage into education. In collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, the event highlights India’s maritime legacy as a catalyst for cultural preservation and tourism. Collectively, these ministries aim to create a cohesive framework for national development, youth empowerment, and global engagement.
Day 2 of the conclave is set to feature captivating discussions on topics such as the contributions of the Cholas to maritime history, advancements in traditional shipbuilding, and the evolution of naval power in India. A concluding session will summarize the key insights and propose a roadmap for preserving and promoting India’s maritime legacy.
