Mumbai, May 3 (NationPress) A recent study reveals that the film, television, and online video services sector in India is unveiling new opportunities within the nation. This industry has facilitated a remarkable 2.64 million jobs across the country.

Moreover, it contributed an impressive INR 5,14,000 crore to the economy in 2024, highlighting the essential role of the screen sector in bolstering the economy, job creation, cultural exports, and enhancing India’s soft power.

This report, compiled by the Motion Picture Association (MPA) in partnership with Deloitte, was unveiled during the inaugural World Audio Visual Entertainment Summit (WAVES) in Mumbai. The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, MPA, and JioStar jointly introduced this industry economic impact report, with additional support from the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI), the Producers Guild of India (PGI), and Creative First.

According to MPA Chairman and CEO Charles Rivkin, “India is a vital global market for MPA members, and its vibrant film, television, and streaming sectors significantly drive job creation, cultural influence, and the overall creative economy of the country.” Rivkin added, “Our members are dedicated to investing in local narratives that showcase the exceptional creativity of artists from all regions of India and sharing them with global audiences. With the right policies and sustained investment, India can strengthen its production ecosystem – one that fosters creativity, drives innovation, and solidifies India’s status as a global media and entertainment hub.”

The MPA’s report estimates that the direct economic output of the screen sector in 2024 reached INR 1,41,000 crore, indicating that the industry successfully navigated the pandemic’s challenges and swiftly adapted to the rising audience demand for films, dramas, and sports on both large and small screens.

Significantly, the research indicates that the local industry is projected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of six to seven percent over the next four years. Additionally, with the right regulatory strategies, the industry could potentially see an enhanced growth trajectory of nine to ten percent CAGR.

Shibasish Sarkar, President of the Producers Guild of India, stated, “The film and television sector could emerge as a flagship industry in India’s global trade aspirations, as well as a representative of India’s culture, if all stakeholders collaborate to foster an optimal growth environment. Recently, we have seen significant advancements in skills and training, enabling Indian crews to deliver high-quality production and post-production work. Progress in these areas will greatly benefit our industry as we enhance our production capabilities.”

The launch was followed by a panel discussion hosted by MPA, focusing on India’s ambitions to establish itself as a global leader in film, television, and streaming. The panel featured Sanjay Jaju – Secretary, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB), Justin Warbrooke – Head of Corporate Development, Disney, Kelly Day – VP International, Amazon MGM, Kaitlin Yarnall – Chief Storytelling Officer, National Geographic Society, with Urmila Venogopalan – President & Managing Director, MPA Asia Pacific, serving as moderator.
