India's AI Infrastructure Growth to Enhance Southeast Asian Tech Ecosystems
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 14 (NationPress) The expansion of India's artificial intelligence infrastructure is set to enhance the regional AI capabilities, rather than divert investments from established Southeast Asian tech centers like Singapore and Malaysia, according to a recent report. This information was shared by industry leaders at the Gitex AI Asia 2026 conference held in Singapore.
The report from ComputerWeekly highlights insights from tech executives, who predict that India's significant scale will serve as a testing ground for the wider Asian market, assisting other regions in achieving both scale and velocity.
Jay Chandan, Chairman and CEO of Gorilla Technology, dismissed the fears that India could potentially replace nations like Singapore, Malaysia, and Vietnam. He emphasized that India's goal is to showcase to emerging economies that they can construct large-scale AI models and succeed with an efficient cost structure.
Sunil Gupta, Co-founder and CEO of Yotta Data Services, pointed out that India's geopolitical stability positions it as a prime candidate for becoming a significant hub for meeting global AI demands.
Gupta also mentioned that India's extensive data centers are addressing global supply chain issues, as more businesses from Europe and the Middle East are relying on India to host their AI training and inference workloads due to GPU shortages in other regions.
The report indicates that with a population of 1.4 billion, including over a billion smartphone users with internet access, India accounts for more than half of the world's digital payment transactions. This surge in digital activity has created a heightened demand for data processing and storage within the country's borders.
Concerns regarding privacy and data security among Indian users have increased alongside the rise of AI adoption. Gupta noted, 'There is a strong desire for sovereign AI and models trained on local data,' describing it as a major trend in India currently, with full government support.
The Indian government, through the IndiaAI Mission, is significantly subsidizing computing expenses by compensating infrastructure providers to allocate GPUs to local model developers, researchers, and academic institutions, as stated in the report.
