Madrid, July 11 (NationPress) India's Jyothi Surekha Vennom and Parneet Kaur have successfully secured their places in the compound women's semifinal at the fourth stage of the Archery World Cup for this season.
Jyothi, who excelled in the qualification round, triumphed over Turkish archer Hazal Burun with a score of 147-144 in the quarterfinals, setting up a semifinal showdown against Korea's Han Seungyeon. Meanwhile, Parneet reached her first World Cup semifinal after narrowly defeating Oznur Cure Girdi from Turkey by just one point, ending at 142-141.
As the 2023 Asian Champion, Parneet had previously not medalled individually outside her continent and was absent from the initial three stages of this year’s World Cup series, which took place in Florida, Shanghai, and Antalya.
During Tuesday's 72-arrow qualification round, she scored 702 points, just two points shy of her personal best of 704, and now stands two matches away from clinching her first World Cup medal.
“For me, I focus on taking three steps during my shot. When I’m not shooting and waiting behind the line, I do calligraphy or draw to enhance my focus,” Parneet explained to World Archery.
Kaur's semifinal opponent is the reigning European Champion Gibson, with a potential final (or bronze final) against either Asian Games Champion and teammate Jyothi or Antalya runner-up Han Seungyeon.
In the men's individual competition, top-seeded Rishabh Yadav, Aman Saini, and Priyansh were eliminated in the second round, while Prathamesh Bhalchandra Fuge exited in the first round.
In recurve archery, both men's and women's teams faced disappointing exits in their initial rounds.
The women's team, consisting of Ankita Bhakat, Deepika Kumari, and 15-year-old debutant Gatha Khadake, lost 3-5 to France in their second-round match after entering as the fourth seed.
The men's team, featuring Dhiraj Bommadevara, Rahul Singh, and Neeraj Chauhan, suffered a 2-6 defeat against Brazil.
