What Actions is India Taking Against the Disturbing Violence on Minorities in Bangladesh?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) India has voiced serious concerns regarding the recent wave of attacks on minorities, particularly Hindus, in Bangladesh. On Friday, Indian officials stated that they are closely observing the situation in the neighboring nation, emphasizing the need for these acts of communal violence to be addressed with urgency and determination.
“There is a disturbing trend of repeated assaults on minorities, including their residences and businesses, at the hands of extremists in Bangladesh. Such incidents must be confronted swiftly and decisively,” remarked Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during a media briefing in New Delhi.
India has brought attention to a worrisome inclination to downplay these attacks by linking them to personal disputes or unrelated issues, warning that such narratives serve only to embolden extremist groups in Bangladesh.
“We have noted a concerning tendency to attribute these incidents to personal rivalries, political disagreements, or other extraneous factors. This casual dismissal only strengthens extremist factions and heightens fear and insecurity among minorities,” Jaiswal added.
In light of the rising violence against minorities in Bangladesh, another Hindu man perished after jumping into a canal while fleeing a mob that accused him of theft in Mohadevpur upazila, Naogaon district, as reported by the Bangladeshi newspaper Daily Manobkantha.
The victim, 25-year-old Mithun Sarkar, tragically lost his life in this shocking incident that occurred on Tuesday afternoon in the Chakgori area of the upazila.
This incident marks the seventh attack within 19 days and the third this week, illustrating a troubling escalation of violence aimed at Hindu communities throughout Bangladesh.
Earlier this week, two Hindu men were killed within 24 hours in separate incidents across Bangladesh.
The first victim, 40-year-old Sarat Chakraborty Mani, was brutally attacked in Narsingdi district on Monday night by an extremist group.
In another incident, a Hindu businessman, 38-year-old Rana Pratap Bairagi, was shot dead in Monirampur Upazila of Jashore district.
On January 3, Khokon Chandra Das, another Hindu man, succumbed after being violently attacked by a mob in Damudya Upazila of Shariatpur district.
The previous week, Bajendra Biswas, 40, was shot dead by a colleague in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh district.
On December 24, reports emerged of the killing of another Hindu youth, 29-year-old Amrit Mondal, who was allegedly lynched by a mob in Hossaindanga of Kalimohar Union in Bangladesh.
Additionally, on December 18, a 25-year-old Hindu youth, Dipu Chandra Das, was killed in a mob lynching over false blasphemy accusations by a Muslim coworker at his factory in Bhaluka Upazila of Mymensingh. The mob not only killed Das but also hung his body from a tree before setting it ablaze.
Earlier on December 26, 2025, India expressed grave concern over the ongoing hostility faced by minorities in Bangladesh, including Hindus, Christians, and Buddhists, and affirmed that it is closely monitoring the developments in its neighboring country.
The rise in violence against minorities, particularly Hindus, has occurred under the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, igniting outrage among citizens and various human rights organizations worldwide.
