New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) On Saturday, India issued a strong denunciation of the abduction and brutal murder of Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a notable leader in the Hindu community of northern Bangladesh, describing it as part of a “pattern of systematic persecution” faced by minorities under the current interim government.
The spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Randhir Jaiswal, articulated India's serious concern, indicating that this incident highlights a troubling trend of targeted violence against Hindus and other minority groups in Bangladesh.
“We have observed with distress the abduction and brutal murder of Shri Bhabesh Chandra Roy, a leader representing Hindu minorities in Bangladesh. This murder is indicative of a pattern of systematic persecution against Hindu minorities under the interim regime, while those responsible for prior incidents continue to operate without fear of punishment,” Jaiswal stated in a message on the social media platform X.
He further added, “We strongly condemn this incident and reiterate our demand for the interim government to fulfill its obligation to safeguard all minorities, including Hindus, without resorting to excuses or making any distinctions.”
India has previously raised alarms regarding the escalating violence against minorities in Bangladesh, yet this recent incident has garnered heightened attention due to Roy’s significant role within the Hindu community.
Roy, who held the position of Vice-President of the Biral unit of the Bangladesh Puja Udjapan Parishad, was abducted from his home in Dinajpur district on Thursday evening. As per police and family accounts, he received a phone call around 4:30 p.m., after which four unknown assailants arrived on motorcycles and forcefully took him to Narabari village. He was reportedly assaulted and later discovered unconscious. He was transported to a hospital in Dinajpur, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival. His wife, Shantana Roy, believes the attackers used the phone call to pinpoint his location before executing the abduction.
Opposition leaders in India also condemned the shocking incident occurring in the neighboring nation.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge emphasized that religious minorities, particularly Hindus, are facing persecution in Bangladesh.
"Attacks on other religious minorities persist as well. Recently, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh made a highly condemnable and disappointing remark regarding India’s northeastern states. The persecution of religious minorities in Bangladesh, violations of human rights, and attempts to erase the legacy of the 1971 Liberation War are actions aimed at undermining the relationship between India and Bangladesh. Since 1971, India has consistently hoped for peace and prosperity for all people in Bangladesh, which is essential for the welfare of the subcontinent," he remarked.
