In New Delhi, on December 18, Video conferencing capabilities are now fully operational in the nation's 3,240 courts and 1,272 jails. As of September 30, 2025, an impressive total of 3.81 crore online case hearings have been successfully conducted, as reported to Parliament on Thursday.
The Minister of State for Law and Justice, Arjun Ram Meghwal, shared in a Rajya Sabha response that cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) along with its components Machine Learning (ML), Optical Character Recognition (OCR), and Natural Language Processing (NLP) are integral to the e-Courts software applications established under the eCourts Project.
He elaborated that AI is being utilized for functionalities including translation, predictive analytics, administrative efficiency enhancement, automated filing processes, intelligent scheduling, improved case information systems, and communication with litigants via chatbots.
As part of Phase-III of the e-Courts Project aimed at fostering transparency, timeliness, and accessibility in the judicial system, nearly 99.5 percent of court complexes are now linked to a Wide Area Network with bandwidth speeds between 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps.
Meghwal confirmed that Case Information System (CIS) 4.0 has been rolled out across all courts, complete with an online user manual for standardized implementation.
Real-time digital services have seen remarkable growth, with over 4 lakh SMS and more than 6 lakh emails dispatched daily, alongside 35 lakh daily hits on the e-Courts portal. More than 14 crore SMS messages have been sent to litigants and advocates.
The Minister reported that under Phase-III of the e-Courts Project, 29 Virtual Courts have been established as of September 30, 2025. These Virtual Courts have processed 8.96 crore challans, with 7.84 crore disposed of, and 86.59 lakh challans paid, totaling Rs 895.59 crore.
Meghwal highlighted the e-Courts Services mobile app, which has seen 3.38 crore downloads, providing essential information to lawyers and litigants regarding case statuses and cause lists.
Additionally, the JustIS app with 21,955 downloads serves as a management aid for judges, allowing them to effectively organize and oversee their judicial responsibilities.

Furthermore, live streaming of court proceedings is active in 11 High Courts; 5,187 court establishments are now enabled on the e-filing platform, with 92.08 lakh cases e-filed by September 30, 2025. The e-Payments system has facilitated 49.2 lakh transactions for court fees totaling Rs 1,215.98 crore and 4.86 lakh transactions for fines amounting to Rs 61.97 crore, according to Meghwal.
