Is the Inauguration of India's First Commercial-Scale Tropical RAS-Based Rainbow Trout Aquaculture Farm a Game-Changer?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 6 (NationPress) The launch of India's inaugural commercial-scale Tropical Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) for Rainbow Trout Aquaculture Farm and Research Institute signifies a pivotal moment in the advancement of Indian aquaculture, as stated by the government.
The Union Minister for Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying and Panchayati Raj, Rajiv Ranjan Singh, officially opened the Smart Green Aquaculture Farm and the innovative Recirculatory Aquaculture System (RAS) Facility located in Kandukur Mandal, Ranga Reddy District, Telangana.
This facility has showcased the capability of farming high-value cold-water species such as Rainbow Trout throughout the year in tropical climates through sophisticated engineering, regulated biological systems, and advanced water recirculation technologies.
This accomplishment has challenged long-held beliefs that premium aquaculture species are restricted to specific climatic zones and has established that technology, rather than climate, is the primary factor influencing aquaculture viability, according to the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
The initiative also serves as a practical training and demonstration platform, providing youths with hands-on experience in advanced aquaculture systems, automation, and biosecurity, thus enhancing human capital in the fisheries sector.
Over the years, substantial investments from the central government have been directed towards this sector. Since the inception of this initiative in 2015, cumulative investments totaling a remarkable Rs 38,572 crore have been approved or announced across various schemes.
Cold water fisheries are quickly emerging as a vibrant and high-potential segment within the broader fisheries sector.
Driven by increasing market demand for premium cold-water species, expanding domestic and export opportunities, and rising investments in sustainable aquaculture technologies, this sub-sector is becoming a significant contributor to livelihood generation and economic development in mountainous and high-altitude regions.
The Department of Fisheries has made notable progress in harnessing these resources through the establishment of rainbow trout hatcheries, which have significantly boosted fish production and created local job opportunities.
