New Delhi, Dec 4 (NationPress) India is set on a path towards a more sustainable and clean maritime future, as stated by Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal. Under the visionary guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, India has adopted an ambitious framework for green growth.
“The Prime Minister has been a steadfast advocate for environmental stewardship, energy transition, and infrastructure prepared for the future,” Sonowal remarked during the unveiling of the nation’s first fully electric green tug.
The launch signifies India’s deep commitment to integrating clean energy within its maritime industry.
Sonowal highlighted that this initiative is closely aligned with PM Modi’s vision for sustainable development, technological innovation, and global leadership in green maritime capabilities.
India’s inaugural all-electric green tug represents a significant milestone in the nation’s transition to sustainable and energy-efficient maritime operations.
Designed for the Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) in Kandla, this tug is being developed under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways’ Green Tug Transition Programme (GTTP), a key initiative aimed at hastening India’s maritime decarbonization efforts.
“The steel-cutting ceremony is a clear demonstration of our commitment to cultivating a greener, more resilient, and self-sufficient maritime ecosystem,” the minister noted.
Sonowal further stated that the Prime Minister’s vision for a 'Viksit Bharat' positions maritime progress at the core of India’s economic transformation.
“Prime Minister Modi has illustrated how innovation can propel national advancement. The all-electric green tug is a remarkable example of how India is transforming his vision into concrete, world-class assets that will enhance our ports, safeguard our environment, and elevate our global presence,” Sonowal emphasized.
The Ministry reports that the new green tug for DPA will boast a 60-tonne bollard pull capacity, ensuring silent operations, zero carbon emissions, and maximized energy efficiency.
This tug will set a standard for next-generation fleet modernization across India's major ports. The tug's electric propulsion, advanced navigation features, and low-maintenance design are anticipated to dramatically decrease operational costs and carbon footprint.
