New Delhi, Aug 1 (NationPress) The economy of India is on a robust trajectory, and the recent announcement of a 25 percent tariff by US President Donald Trump should be viewed as a momentary hurdle rather than a significant obstruction, according to Raymond Vickery, Senior Associate at the Centre for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) and former US Assistant Secretary of Commerce, who spoke on Friday.
In an exclusive conversation with IANS, Vickery indicated that although this decision represents a departure from the multilateral trade framework that has facilitated global trade for years, India's long-term outlook is still optimistic.
He stated, “India’s economic resilience, vast market, and openness to competition will ensure its continued advancement.”
Vickery emphasized the importance of India focusing on expanding trade alliances and lowering tariffs to create new opportunities.
He also mentioned that India's ascendance as a global economic powerhouse hinges on its capacity to integrate into the global marketplace.
“India is strategically positioned to spearhead the emerging economic landscape. While tariffs may temporarily affect specific sectors, they cannot halt India’s progress,” he remarked.
Vickery encouraged leaders to perceive the current situation as a chance to strengthen trade relationships on more solid foundations.
“The India-US partnership is crucial, and now is the time to leverage economic collaboration as a catalyst for mutual prosperity,” he further added.
Meanwhile, late on Thursday, Trump signed an executive order to implement a 25 percent tariff on India starting Friday.
However, this did not include additional tariffs on India for purchasing Russian energy or for its membership in the BRICS group—issues that Trump had previously raised.
When Trump initially announced the tariff threat, India firmly stated it “will take all necessary measures to safeguard our national interests.”
“The country will adopt every necessary action to protect national interests while negotiating trade agreements with other nations,” said Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday.
