New Delhi, Jan 17 (NationPress) Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia announced on Saturday that India is now recognized for having the lowest data costs globally along with the highest data consumption, a feat attributed to the country's strong digital infrastructure.
With over 120 crore mobile users, the expansion of the 4G network is set to reach every village by June this year.
“India boasts the world's lowest data costs and leads in data usage. This digital transformation spearheaded by PM Narendra Modi is genuinely focused on benefiting the people,” the minister shared on the X social media platform.
The state-owned BSNL has successfully established 97,068 4G sites, with 93,511 sites currently operational as of October 31, 2025. The company plans to upgrade all 4G towers to 5G shortly.
Moreover, 5G services have been launched across every state and union territory, now accessible in 99.9% of districts. As of October 31, telecom service providers (TSPs) have set up 5.08 lakh 5G Base Transceiver Stations (BTSs) throughout both rural and urban areas.
In total, more than 31 lakh BTSs have been installed nationwide. The government has initiated several programs to enhance call quality and internet access in underserved regions, including the BharatNet project aimed at providing broadband to Gram Panchayats (GPs) and villages, mobile service schemes for areas affected by Left Wing Extremism (LWE), the 4G Saturation scheme for previously uncovered villages, and the launch of the GatiShakti Sanchar portal and RoW (Right of Way) Rules.
Telecom infrastructure deployment is being carried out by both private TSPs and state-led providers.
According to Scindia, the integration of technology, spectrum, devices, applications, and sustainability is vital for innovations to progress and scale. He emphasized that spectrum policy will play a crucial role in India's 6G strategy, highlighting that significant spectrum refarming has already begun with more plans on the horizon.
