Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 11 (NationPress) The state-owned telecom operator Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) is swiftly enhancing its 4G network throughout India by deploying 100,000 locally developed 4G sites, as reported to Parliament on Wednesday.
In a written statement to the Lok Sabha, Minister of State for Communications and Rural Development, Pemmasani Chandra Sekhar, revealed that BSNL has successfully set up 97,906 4G sites nationwide, with 96,103 already functional.
The goal of this initiative is to bolster telecom services and broaden high-speed internet access across the nation,” he added.
The government has undertaken numerous measures to fortify BSNL's position and competitiveness in the telecommunications field.
“To assist the company, three revival packages totaling approximately Rs 3.22 lakh crore have been approved,” Sekhar stated.
These packages encompass capital infusion, debt restructuring, viability gap funding for rural telecom services, and the allocation of spectrum for both 4G and 5G services.
Furthermore, the government has allocated spectrum to BSNL across multiple bands—700 MHz, 800 MHz, 1800 MHz, 2100 MHz, 2500 MHz, and 3300 MHz—at auction-determined prices.
This spectrum will enable the company to deliver both 4G and 5G services across the nation.
According to the minister, the revival packages are starting to yield positive outcomes, with BSNL reporting operating profits since the financial year 2020–21.
Over the years, the company has also enhanced its telecom infrastructure, having added 13,748 2G base transceiver stations, 39,722 3G base stations, and 1,03,305 4G base stations to strengthen its network.
The government is placing additional emphasis on improving connectivity in rural India through the BharatNet program.
The revised BharatNet program was greenlit by the Union Cabinet on August 4, 2023, with a budget of Rs 1.39 lakh crore to extend optical fiber connectivity to all gram panchayats and villages based on demand.
The initiative also aims to deliver 1.5 crore high-speed FTTH broadband connections in rural regions, with BSNL serving as the project management agency.
