Miami, June 15 (NationPress) Egypt's international forward Trezeguet squandered a first-half penalty as Al Ahly and Inter Miami concluded their opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup with a scoreless draw on Sunday (IST).
Initially, Al Ahly appeared more threatening at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami, but their efforts were thwarted by a series of remarkable saves from Oscar Ustari.
First, the experienced Argentine goalkeeper denied Wessam Abou Ali after a rapid counterattack and then deflected Emam Ashour's goal-bound shot following a powerful run by Trezeguet, according to reports from Xinhua.
Al Ahly experienced a setback in the 14th minute when Ashour had to leave the field after a collision, replaced by Zizo. The midfielder's departure seemed to inject energy into the Major League Soccer side, and Lionel Messi soon had the first clear opportunity for his team, lifting a free-kick just over the bar.
The former Barcelona star then provided a brilliant pass for Noah Allen, but the defender was unable to reach it before the on-rushing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy.
Inter Miami narrowly avoided conceding in the 30th minute when Abou Ali found the net, only to be ruled offside by a narrow margin.
Abou Ali came close again with a curling 30-yard free-kick that Ustari deftly tipped over the bar. Inter Miami had their goalkeeper to thank once more as he saved a close-range header from Achraf Dari.
Zizo continued to trouble Inter Miami with his intelligent movements, earning a penalty after being brought down in a reckless challenge by Telasco Segovia.
However, Ustari rose to the occasion, diving to his right to deny Trezeguet's penalty kick.
After the halftime interval, Inter Miami appeared more energized, and El Shenawy managed to block a powerful shot from Tadeo Allende within the six-yard area.
As the match progressed, Messi became increasingly threatening, forcing another impressive save from El Shenawy with a fierce effort from the edge of the box, followed by a low free-kick that curled into the side netting.
Fafa Picault replaced Allende in the 81st minute and quickly made an impact, connecting with a header from Messi's cross that was again tipped over by El Shenawy.
In stoppage time, Inter Miami was incredibly unfortunate not to score as El Shenawy deflected Messi's 30-yard shot over the bar before showcasing quick reflexes to stop Maximiliano Falcon's header.
Inter Miami's next encounter is against Porto in Atlanta on June 19, while Al Ahly will face Palmeiras in New Jersey on the same day.
