Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tehran, Feb 16 (NationPress) On Monday, Iran's Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi engaged with Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Geneva for in-depth technical discussions regarding Tehran's nuclear situation.
This meeting took place at Araghchi's accommodation in Geneva, Switzerland, right before the upcoming indirect nuclear negotiations between Iran and the United States, which are planned for Tuesday, as reported by the Iranian Foreign Ministry and Xinhua News Agency.
During their discussions, both parties exchanged insights on various technical matters concerning cooperation between Iran and the IAEA, in light of Tehran's obligations under safeguards and a law enacted by the Iranian parliament last June to halt bilateral collaborations. The Iranian delegation also articulated its technical perspectives regarding the indirect nuclear talks with the United States.
Post-meeting, Grossi mentioned on social media that the two sides engaged in “thorough technical discussions” in preparation for Tuesday's “significant” negotiations.
Earlier, Araghchi noted on social media that he was accompanied by Iranian nuclear experts during his Geneva visit, with whom he would engage in “deep technical discussions” with Grossi. He also mentioned a forthcoming meeting with Omani Foreign Minister Sayyid Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi ahead of the indirect talks.
“I am in Geneva with genuine ideas to secure a fair and just agreement. What is off the table is compliance under pressure,” Araghchi stated.
Iranian and US delegations, led by Araghchi and US President Donald Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff, previously convened for their first round of discussions in Muscat, Oman on February 6. Witkoff is expected to lead the US delegation once more in Geneva, as per reports from US media.
