Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Vienna, March 30 (NationPress) The heavy water production facility at Khondab, situated in central Iran, has suffered significant damage and is currently non-operational, as reported by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
The IAEA stated on the social media platform X: "Following an independent assessment of satellite images and understanding of the site, the IAEA has verified that the heavy water production facility at Khondab, which Iran indicated was attacked on March 27, has endured substantial damage and is not functioning at this time."
The agency further confirmed that the facility does not contain any declared nuclear materials, according to reports from the Xinhua news agency.
On March 27, the IAEA received information from Iran regarding the assault on the heavy water production site in Khondab, yet it confirmed that there was no identified radiation risk. These strikes occurred amidst the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which escalated on February 28.
On Saturday, the IAEA also confirmed that Iran reported additional attacks on critical installations, including the heavy water production facility at Khondab. The IAEA reiterated that no radiation risk was posed by the strike, as the site contains no declared nuclear materials.
In a statement on social media, the agency mentioned: "IAEA informed by Iran that the heavy water production facility at Khondab was also struck today. No radiation risk identified as the site contains no declared nuclear materials."
Separately, Iran disclosed that the Khuzestan Steel Production Factory, which utilizes sealed radioactive sources—Cobalt-60 (Co-60) and Cesium-137 (Cs-137)—for industrial gauging, was also targeted. Authorities affirmed that there was no radiation release off-site, and operations at the facility remain normal.
Previously on Friday, the IAEA expressed concerns over military activities near the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, marking the third attack within a span of ten days.
