New Delhi, Nov 3 (NationPress) The All India Football Federation (AIFF) has declared that the upcoming season of the Indian Women’s League (IWL) will take place in two distinct phases following a collaborative decision made with all participating clubs.
The new format was introduced after numerous teams expressed the need for adjustments to accommodate players engaged in international duties and commitments to their national teams.
This decision was reached during a meeting on Thursday, October 30, where AIFF officials and representatives from all eight IWL clubs convened. “The All India Football Federation held a meeting with all eight Indian Women's League clubs on Thursday, October 30, 2025. At the clubs' request, it has been mutually decided that the IWL will be played in two phases,” the federation stated.
According to the updated schedule, Phase 1 of the IWL is set to occur from December 20, 2025, to January 6, 2026, while Phase 2 will commence on April 20 and conclude by May 10, 2026. The AIFF clarified that this schedule revision is aimed at allowing players who are part of national teams or competing in international tournaments to meet their obligations without conflicting with the domestic league calendar.
“With a significant number of players involved in their respective clubs' international assignments and national team commitments,” the federation noted, “the revised calendar ensures a balance between league participation and preparation for international tournaments.”
The AIFF also highlighted the recent international endeavors of the women’s teams, mentioning that these squads have already secured spots in the AFC Women’s Asian Cups and have participated in extensive training and friendly matches. As per the federation, “The respective teams have qualified for the AFC Women's Asian Cups and have participated in the following matches after their qualification: Senior Women's National Team - 13 days in camp, 3 friendly matches; U20 Women's National Team - 12 days in camp, 2 friendly matches.”
The governing body is optimistic that the two-phase structure will aid clubs in their planning while prioritizing player welfare and maintaining competitive intensity throughout the league. East Bengal, the defending IWL champion, will aim to retain their title under this revised schedule.
