How Did Jadavpur University Achieve the Top Spot in NIRF Rankings for State Universities?

Kolkata, Sep 4 (NationPress) In a remarkable achievement for West Bengal, Jadavpur University in Kolkata has claimed the title of the foremost state public university in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2025. This accomplishment marks a rise from its previous second position in 2024, surpassing Anna University, which has now fallen to the second spot. On Thursday, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee expressed her congratulations to the faculty and students of Jadavpur University after it secured the top position among state universities.

According to the India Rankings 2025 published by the Union Ministry of Education on Thursday, the university also achieved the ninth rank in the overall university category, earning accolades from various sectors.

This year’s NIRF rankings evaluated institutions across 17 distinct categories, including engineering, management, medicine, law, pharmacy, research, and the recently introduced Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) category.

Using her X handle, an elated Chief Minister Banerjee stated, "Thrilled to announce that our excellence in education is recognized once again!"

"The Ministry of Education, Government of India has released the rankings for Higher Education Institutes in the country today, namely India Ranking 2025. This year, in the State Public University category, Jadavpur University is ranked first nationally, and 9th among all universities across various categories. It stands out as the only state university among the top 10 in the university rankings."

The Union Ministry of Education unveiled the NIRF rankings on Thursday, showcasing the 10th edition where IIT Madras maintains its top position in the overall category for the seventh consecutive year. The rankings were announced live by Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, emphasizing the top-performing institutions in higher education nationwide.

Following the announcement, Chief Minister Banerjee took to social media to relay the exciting news, stating, "My heartfelt congratulations to all the educators, students, researchers, and staff of Jadavpur University for elevating our pride!"

NIRF assesses educational institutions based on five critical parameters: teaching and learning, research and professional practice, outreach and inclusivity, graduation outcomes, and perception. For state universities across the nation, these rankings are vital, showcasing how regional institutions compete on a national scale, providing affordable education while excelling in research and innovation.
