Paris, March 27 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar underscored the critical role of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) in enhancing global connectivity during the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting held in France amidst rising geopolitical tensions.

He remarked that the ongoing conflicts in West Asia underline the necessity for robust trade routes and secure supply chains.

During the session, EAM Jaishankar pointed out that India's increasing trade agreements with key global partners, such as the Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the European Union, the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), and the United Kingdom, have significantly bolstered IMEC's value.

On the social media platform X, he stated on Friday: “Shared thoughts regarding IMEC at the second session of the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with invited partners. The uncertainties stemming from the conflicts in West Asia only strengthen the argument for more resilient trade corridors and supply chains.”

He further added: “Simultaneously, India's FTAs with the European Union, EFTA nations, and the UK have augmented the utility of IMEC.”

EAM Jaishankar also expressed appreciation for the increasing enthusiasm among international partners to actualize this connectivity initiative. He highlighted the pressing need for reforms within the United Nations Security Council and emphasized the challenges faced by the Global South.

“I emphasized the urgency of UNSC reforms, improving peacekeeping operations, and fortifying humanitarian supply chains. I specifically addressed the Global South’s concerns regarding energy challenges, fertilizer supplies, and food security,” he stated.

Additionally, he engaged in bilateral talks with the UK and German Foreign Ministers. On X, he mentioned: “Had a productive discussion with UK Foreign Secretary, Yvette Cooper, covering both bilateral and global matters.”

After his meeting with the German Foreign Minister, EAM mentioned, “Followed up on our recent telephonic conversation with German FM Johann Wadephul.”

EAM Jaishankar arrived in France on Thursday for the two-day G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting. Upon his arrival, he posted: “Reached Abbaye des Vaux-de-Cernay, France, to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with Partner Countries. I was warmly welcomed by French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot for my first bilateral.”
