Srinagar, Sep 22 (NationPress) The cabinet of Jammu and Kashmir, under the leadership of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, is set to convene on Tuesday to address several significant matters. It is anticipated that the cabinet will recommend the Lieutenant Governor to call for the autumn session of the Legislative Assembly.
According to the Jammu & Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019, a time gap exceeding six months between the last meeting of one session and the first meeting of the subsequent session of the Legislative Assembly is not permitted.
The Act states, “The Lieutenant Governor shall, from time to time, summon the Legislative Assembly to meet at such time and place as he thinks fit, but six months shall not intervene between its last sitting in one session and the date appointed for its first sitting in the next session.”
Since the previous session's last sitting occurred on April 29, the next session must be conducted by October 28 to adhere to the six-month rule.
The topics of statehood and reservation are expected to be prominent in the upcoming discussions.
During the last Assembly session, three resolutions concerning statehood lapsed due to disturbances instigated by the National Conference following the rejection of their legislators' adjournment motion regarding the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025.
The matter of reservation was a recurring theme in the previous session, with Sajad Gani Lone pressing the government on this issue.
The arrest of MLA Doda, Mehraj Malik, under the PSA may also be raised during the Legislative Assembly's autumn session.
