Srinagar, Dec 19 (NationPress) Following a prolonged dry period lasting over two months, the region of Jammu and Kashmir is anticipated to receive both rain and snow within the next 48 hours. The Meteorological (MeT) Department announced on Friday that moderate snowfall in the higher elevations and rainfall in the plains will commence late on the evening of December 20.

Mukhtar Ahmad, the Director of the local MeT Department, informed IANS that snow is expected in the higher terrains and rain in the plains during the night between December 20 and December 21, and this weather pattern could persist until late afternoon on December 21.

Particularly on December 21, certain higher areas in the Ganderbal, Bandipora, and Kupwara districts may experience significant snowfall.

In light of the forecast, authorities in the Baramulla, Kupwara, Bandipora, and Ganderbal districts have issued advisories urging residents in elevated regions to remain indoors during snowfall.

Over the past two months, nearly all water bodies have been experiencing very low discharge, with rivers, streams, springs, and lakes suffering the consequences of the dry spell.

This extended dry period has led to an increase in respiratory issues, with common complaints of colds, dry coughs, and flu being reported at hospitals throughout the Valley.

Medical professionals recommend that individuals, particularly children and the elderly, avoid prolonged exposure to cold and chilly air.

The harsh winter period known as ‘Chillai Kalan’ spans 40 days, beginning on December 21 and concluding on January 30. During this time, most water bodies in the Valley tend to freeze as temperatures can drop to between minus 6 and minus 8 degrees Celsius. The daytime temperatures remain below ten degrees Celsius during this period, resulting in a narrower range between minimum and maximum temperatures.

The recorded minimum temperatures were minus 2.1 degrees Celsius in Srinagar, minus 2.6 degrees in Pahalgam, and one degree in Gulmarg on Friday. In Jammu city, the minimum temperature was recorded at 9.9 degrees Celsius, while Katra had 9.2, Batote 6.7, Banihal 3.5, and Bhaderwah 2.3 degrees.

Point of View

I can affirm that while Jammu and Kashmir is poised for much-needed precipitation, the potential challenges posed by this sudden weather change cannot be overlooked. It is essential for residents to heed advisories and remain cautious, especially given the health implications of prolonged dry conditions.
