Japan's J S Ikazuchi Destroyer Transits Taiwan Strait; China Issues Strong Protest
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Tokyo, April 17 (NationPress) The destroyer J S Ikazuchi of the Japanese Maritime Self-Defense Force navigated through the Taiwan Strait on Friday, as reported by local media.
As noted by Japan's prominent Kyodo news agency, Japan had historically avoided sending MSDF ships through the strait to prevent provoking Beijing, until September 2024, when the destroyer Sazanami made the inaugural passage. Since then, two more MSDF vessels traversed the strait in February and June 2025.
This marks the first transit since Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi assumed office last October, a development that could exacerbate tensions between Japan and China, especially after her controversial remarks regarding Taiwan in November, according to Kyodo news.
The J S Ikazuchi is scheduled to participate in the significant annual joint military exercise, Balikatan, held in the Philippines from Monday until May 8.
In response, the Chinese Foreign Ministry accused Japan of attempting to provoke China, emphasizing that Taiwan's self-governed status is a “red line” that should not be crossed.
As reported by Xinhua news agency, China's Ministry of National Defence has formally protested Japan's actions.
A spokesperson from the Defence Ministry remarked that the passage of the Japanese vessel sends incorrect signals to the secessionist factions in Taiwan. “We urge Japan to adhere to the One China principle and honor the four political documents between our nations,” he stated, warning that the Chinese military stands ready to implement robust measures against external interference while remaining vigilant.
Xu Chenghua, spokesperson for China's Eastern Theatre Command, indicated that the People's Liberation Army has deployed air and naval assets to monitor the vessel closely, ensuring control over the situation.
