New Delhi, June 30 (NationPress) Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren on Monday commemorated the heroes of the historic Santhal Hool Kranti -- Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano -- during a solemn event at Jharkhand Bhavan in New Delhi.
Notable leaders, including JMM MLA from Tundi, Mathura Mahato, and Gandey MLA Kalpana Soren, were present at the gathering.
During his address, Chief Minister Soren remarked, “June 30 is firmly established in India’s history as a day dedicated to the sacrifices made by the tribal community -- the initial spark of the freedom movement. The Hool Kranti of 1855 represented not just a revolt against British colonial rule but a widespread uprising demanding rights over jal (water), jungle (forest), and zameen (land). Our ancestors envisioned a liberated nation despite overwhelming challenges. Ignoring such courageous forbearers would be a disservice to our shared history.”
He expressed his regret for being unable to attend the official event at Bhognadih in Sahibganj -- the birthplace of the Hool rebellion -- due to the health issues of his father and JMM leader, Dishom Guru Shibu Soren, whom he considers a guardian of the Hool legacy.
“Guruji, who has always exemplified the struggle and dedication demonstrated by figures like Sido-Kanhu, Chand-Bhairav, and Phoolo-Jhano, is currently unwell. His absence has prevented me from visiting the revolutionary site of Bhognadih this year,” Soren stated.
He also shared images from the ceremony on his X handle, stating: “Hool Diwas is not merely a one-off event for us -- it symbolizes a day of determination. Hool is our foundation, our identity. In the future, our ‘Hool Ulgulan’ will persist -- advocating for a tribal religious code and the safeguarding of our culture, language, civilization, and identity.”
Emphasizing his father's contributions, Soren mentioned, “Guruji has fought tirelessly against the feudal zamindari system and for tribal rights. The citizens of our state pray for his swift recovery and ongoing guidance.”
After the event, the Chief Minister addressed the media concerning the severe rainfall and elevated water levels in rivers throughout Jharkhand. He assured that the situation is under vigilant observation.
“The heavy rainfall and subsequent flooding pose significant challenges. The state government is fully attentive and prepared to assist all affected by this calamity,” he assured.
