New Delhi/Imphal, Oct 24 (NationPress) The proposal to appoint Ayangbam Oken Singh as the Chairperson of the Scheduled Caste Department of the Manipur Congress Committee has been approved by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge as of Friday.
In a statement, K. C. Venugopal, General Secretary of the All India Congress Committee, made the announcement regarding Singh's new role as a politician and social worker.
According to sources within the party in Imphal, the 54-year-old leader, who represents the Scheduled Caste community, was previously affiliated with the National People’s Party before joining Congress a few years ago.
Singh was a candidate for the NPP in the 2022 Manipur Assembly elections, where he contested the Sekmai (SC) constituency but was defeated by the BJP's Heikham Dingo Singh.
Meanwhile, the state Congress President, Keisham Meghachandra Singh, expressed on Friday that the people of Manipur are witnessing the consequences of poor governance, saying, “Vinash Kale Vipreet Buddhi!” (When destiny approaches, people tend to act foolishly).
He added, “When a government disconnects from truth and the voices of its citizens, its end is inevitable. The BJP's hubris, unfairness, and divisive politics are steering them toward their own demise. Consequently, the populace is suffering immense pain and endless sorrow. Communities that once coexisted peacefully are now torn apart by fear and mistrust,” as stated by the Congress leader.
Singh, a Congress MLA, emphasized the need for the people's voices to transcend the politics of hatred and restore peace, justice, and normalcy in the region. He affirmed that the Congress party stands in solidarity with the people of Manipur to heal wounds, unite communities, and reconstruct a peaceful and dignified future for everyone.
The state Congress chief criticized the so-called double-engine BJP government for its failure to construct and maintain crucial roads and highways, which are lifelines for Manipur.
He noted that the state’s national highways are in a dreadful state, with no evident signs of repair, maintenance, or improvement. The hardships faced by the people navigating these roads are unprecedented in Manipur’s history, he remarked.
