Imphal, Feb 11 (NationPress) The opposition Congress party has firmly stated that they will resist any attempts to implement President’s rule in Manipur, following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh.

Keisham Meghachandra Singh, President of Manipur Congress, described the order issued by Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Sunday, which annulled the budget session of the state Assembly, as illegal and unconstitutional.

In a post on X, he remarked: “The order from the Hon’ble Governor of Manipur dated February 9, 2025, which declares the order from January 24, 2025 as ‘null and void’, is illegal and unconstitutional. There is no indication of an Assembly Session being called, even though today marks the final day for a constitutionally mandated meeting of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.”

“A constitutional crisis will emerge within hours in Manipur. I trust PM Modi does not wish to place Manipur under a state of suspended animation or impose President’s Rule. We will oppose any actions towards suspended animation or President’s Rule,” Meghachandra Singh asserted.

On Sunday, the Governor rendered the Assembly budget session 'null and void' shortly after Biren Singh's resignation. The budget session of the Manipur Assembly was set to commence on February 10 with the Governor’s customary address, continuing until February 24.

On February 14, Chief Minister Biren Singh, who also oversees the Finance portfolio, was to present the Budget estimates for the 2025-26 fiscal year.

Previously, Meghachandra Singh affirmed that the Congress party will resist any initiatives to impose President's Rule in Manipur for the benefit of the people.

“The Congress party advocates for a democratically elected popular government in Manipur to uphold democracy within the state,” stated Meghachandra Singh, who is also a member of the Manipur Legislative Assembly.

In the meantime, security measures have been escalated in the conflict-ridden Manipur due to the unstable situation in the northeastern state.

An additional force of Manipur police, commandos, and Central Armed Police Forces has been stationed in sensitive, vulnerable, and mixed-population areas.

The Indian Army’s Spear Corps announced on X that Lieutenant General Abhijit S. Pendharkar, the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of 3-Corps, visited Manipur to assess operational readiness.

“The Corps Commander engaged with Assam Rifles and Manipur police personnel, commending them for their professionalism and high morale,” the announcement stated.
