Bambolim (Goa), Oct 31 (NationPress) A historic and exceptional goal from goalkeeper Samik Mitra secured a 1-1 draw for Chennaiyin FC against Dempo Sporting Club in the AIFF Super Cup 2025-26 on Friday at the GMC Athletic Stadium in Bambolim.

Samik made history by becoming the first goalkeeper in the club's history to score from open play in a competitive match, netting a remarkable strike from inside his own box at the half-hour mark.

Head coach Clifford Miranda implemented five changes to the starting lineup from the previous match, with Mitra returning as the goalkeeper and Klusner Pereira taking a spot in defense. In midfield, Kingslee Fernandes paired with Lalrinliana Hnamte, while Vivek S and Maheson Singh supported Irfan Yadwad in the attack.

Chennaiyin started strong, applying pressure and creating early opportunities. Kingslee attempted a long-range shot after winning the ball in midfield, and a quick passing sequence set up Vivek on the wing—his low cross was narrowly cleared by a retreating defender. The Marina Machans continued to create chances, with Klusner's deflected shot just missing the target moments after a dangerous delivery from Mandar Rao Dessai.

Despite their dominance, Miranda's squad fell behind in the 25th minute when Dempo scored from a free kick. However, just minutes later, Samik pulled off an unforgettable moment as his long kick from his own area caught the opponent off-guard, sailing over the Dempo defense and beyond the goalkeeper's reach to level the game.

Chennaiyin resumed with the same intensity after the break, maintaining possession and pushing forward with determination. Miranda's substitutions brought fresh energy, allowing Chennaiyin to keep Dempo pinned in their own half for extended periods. Irfan came close midway through the second half, glancing a header just wide of the post.

As the match approached its conclusion, Chennaiyin intensified their efforts in search of a winning goal. Gurkirat Singh's late attempt was deflected for a corner, and Klusner Pereira's curling delivery in stoppage time found Irfan, whose touch rolled agonizingly wide of the net. Despite the missed opportunity, the all-Indian side secured a well-deserved point, concluding their Super Cup campaign on a positive note.
