Ranchi, Sep 15 (NationPress) The political and social landscape in Jharkhand has become increasingly charged regarding the push for Scheduled Tribe (Adivasi) status for the Kurmi caste.
As Kurmi organizations gear up for a wave of protests across Jharkhand, Odisha, and West Bengal, tribal factions are mounting strong opposition, raising concerns about potential clashes.
During a significant demonstration at Jantar Mantar in Delhi last week, Kurmi groups declared a “Rail Roko-Rasta Roko” movement, pledging to persist until their demand is fulfilled.
“Our fight will continue until Kurmis are acknowledged as tribals,” asserted the organizations.
In contrast, tribal groups have categorically dismissed the call for ST status for Kurmis at two distinct press conferences in Ranchi on Monday.
Former ministers Devkumar Dhan and Geetashree Oraon argued that the Kurmi request constitutes an “invasion of tribal rights.”
Oraon remarked: “The intentions of Kurmi leaders revolve solely around obtaining positions as MLAs, MPs, and ministers by usurping the constitutional rights of tribals. They obstructed railway lines for five days last year without facing any legal consequences.”
She further stated that Kurmis associate themselves with Shivaji Maharaj and the Maratha empire, suggesting that granting them tribal status is unfeasible. She cautioned that tribals will oppose such actions at every level.
The Central Sarna Committee of tribal members has organized a dharna at Raj Bhavan on September 20 and plans to block Deputy Commissioners’ offices in all districts on October 17.
Committee leader Nisha Bhagat claimed: “Kurmi, Kudmi, and Mahato are all synonymous. They were never tribals. Granting them tribal status would jeopardize the very existence of tribals nationwide.”
A number of tribal leaders, including Sanjay Tirkey, Harshita Munda, Fulchand Tirkey, Kundarsi Munda, Niranjana Herenj, W. Munda, and Laxmi Narayan Munda, were present during the press conference held in Ranchi on Monday.
