Ranchi, Sep 20 (NationPress) Thousands of Kurmi community members staged protests on railway tracks at over 15 different locations throughout Jharkhand on Saturday, demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The demonstrations have significantly impacted train services on the Howrah-New Delhi main line, prompting the cancellation, diversion, or rescheduling of numerous trains.
Protesters occupied tracks at Rai, Muri, Tatisilwai, and Mesra railway stations in Ranchi, with similar protests reported from Giridih, Chakradharpur, Jamtara, Dhanbad, and Bokaro. Tensions escalated at Pradhankhunta railway station in Dhanbad when security forces attempted to clear the tracks.
Clad in traditional garments and carrying drums, the protesters started gathering at 4 a.m., even with police barricades in place. The Kurmi organizations leading the protests had previously declared intentions to disrupt train operations at 100 stations across Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Odisha, including 40 in Jharkhand alone on September 20.
Railway operations faced severe disruption, with the Dhanbad division canceling the Hatia-Bardhaman MEMU (13504) and Hatia-Kharagpur MEMU (18036), while the Dhanbad-Alappuzha Express (13351) was rescheduled from 11:35 a.m. to 6:35 p.m. Additionally, the Ranchi-Chhapra Express (18613) was diverted through the Ranchi-Tori route, severely affecting traffic at Parasnath (Giridih), Chandrapura (Bokaro), and Rai (Ranchi) railway stations.
Describing the protest as a “historic demonstration,” organizers stated they mobilized support through campaigns in villages. Enhanced security measures have been implemented, including the deployment of RPF, GRP, state police, and surveillance through CCTV and drones.
Authorities have cautioned of stringent actions against individuals damaging railway property, stating that any incurred losses will be recuperated. AJSU Party MLA Jairam Mahato, who leads the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha, expressed his support for the Kurmi cause. In a video statement, he emphasized that the struggle extends beyond just tribal status to include recognition for the Kurmali language and the safeguarding of land rights.
Moreover, his party’s MP from Giridih, Chandra Prakash Choudhary, led a protest at Hesalong railway station in Ramgarh district, successfully blocking railway tracks.
