New Delhi, April 1 (NationPress) In a heartbreaking incident, two freight trains collided in the Sahibganj district of Jharkhand, leading to the tragic deaths of two individuals and injuring four more.

As per police reports, the accident occurred around 3 a.m. near Bhognadih in the region covered by the Barhet police station late Monday night.

The trains involved were operated by the National Thermal Power Corporation Limited (NTPC), which owns the railway tracks used primarily for transporting coal to its power plants.

Following the crash, both train engines erupted in flames, prompting immediate emergency rescue efforts.

Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Kishore Tirkey confirmed the fatalities, stating, "Both train drivers perished in the head-on collision of the freight trains."

A representative from Eastern Railways, Kaushik Mitra, clarified that both trains and the railway track were owned by NTPC, and not Indian Railways.

The incident transpired on a track that links NTPC's Kahalgaon Super Thermal Power Station in Bihar's Bhagalpur district to the Farakka Plant in West Bengal's Murshidabad district.

Both trains were transporting coal, and the collision led to significant destruction. A fire brigade team from Sahibganj arrived swiftly to battle the flames.

Railway officials and staff were present to aid in the rescue initiatives.

Initial reports indicated that seven individuals were on board the two engines; tragically, two lost their lives, while four others sustained serious injuries, including four personnel from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) who were aboard the train.

The injured individuals were transported to Sadar Hospital in Barhet, where their conditions remain critical.

The collision occurred when a freight train transporting coal from Lamtia to Farakka collided with a stationary train on the track. The intensity of the crash was so great that both engines were consumed by flames.
