Ghatshila (Jharkhand), Nov 14 (NationPress) The ruling Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) has achieved a remarkable triumph in the Ghatshila Assembly bye-election, with their candidate Somesh Chandra Soren defeating BJP contender Babulal Soren by a significant margin of 38,524 votes.
From the outset, Somesh Soren maintained a commanding lead, gradually increasing the gap as the counting unfolded.
He garnered 1,04,794 votes, while the BJP candidate received 66,270 votes. All other 11 candidates failed to secure enough support to retain their deposits.
This bye-election was called following the unexpected passing of sitting JMM MLA Ramdas Soren. The party selected his son, Somesh Chandra Soren, to continue his father’s political legacy.
The BJP nominated Babulal Soren, the son of former Chief Minister Champai Soren. This contest was perceived as a symbolic showdown between Hemant Soren and Champai Soren, both of whom began their political careers within the JMM.
After Hemant Soren resigned as Chief Minister last year, Champai Soren departed from the JMM and joined the BJP, setting the stage for a fierce political battle.
During the campaign, the JMM sought votes by leveraging the legacy of the late Ramdas Soren and the achievements of the Hemant Soren administration.
In contrast, the BJP relied on Champai Soren’s influence and their party's organizational network.
In response to the results, JMM General Secretary and spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya stated that the “soil of Jharkhand has once again rejected the BJP.”
He emphasized that despite the JMM elevating Champai Soren, the public's decision indicates his lack of political stature outside the party.
Thirteen candidates competed in the bye-election, though the primary contest was largely between the JMM and the BJP.
Candidate Ramdas Murmu from the Jharkhand Loktantrik Krantikari Morcha (JLKM) attempted to make a mark but only secured 11,542 votes.
The polling took place on November 11, with a notable voter turnout of 73.88 percent.
