New Delhi, April 19 (NationPress) In a remarkable advancement for the Centre's Make in India initiative, JSW Steel and POSCO revealed their intention to create a 50-50 joint venture aimed at developing a 6 million tonnes per annum integrated steel manufacturing facility in Odisha, with completion targeted for the end of 2026.
This announcement, made by Kyunghoon Kim via the social media platform X, comes just prior to a crucial summit involving India and South Korea.
The initiative is viewed as a pivotal step taken by a Korean corporation to bolster India’s manufacturing goals in alignment with the Make in India program.
“Ahead of the Summit, we have a significant declaration from the Indian and Korean industrial leaders: JSW Steel and POSCO will establish a 50-50 joint venture by the end of 2026 to set up a 6 MTPA integrated steel manufacturing plant in Odisha,” he stated.
“This is yet another instance of a Korean firm supporting Make in India,” he emphasized.
The upcoming steel plant in Odisha is anticipated to enhance domestic production capabilities and foster technological collaboration between Indian and Korean enterprises.
This development is in line with India's overarching objective to establish itself as a global manufacturing center and to diminish reliance on imports in crucial sectors such as steel.
The announcement gains additional importance as South Korean President Lee Jae Myung is expected to arrive in New Delhi today for a dual-country visit, which also includes Vietnam.
During his trip, President Lee is scheduled to engage in discussions with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking their third face-to-face meeting following earlier interactions at international forums.
The summit is projected to prioritize expanding collaboration in various sectors, including shipbuilding, maritime industries, artificial intelligence, and defense, while also addressing global energy supply chain challenges exacerbated by ongoing geopolitical tensions.
Officials have indicated that enhancing economic relations and assisting Korean businesses operating in India will be key focal points during the visit.
India has established itself as a vital manufacturing hub and an expanding consumer market for South Korean firms, notably in sectors like electronics, automobiles, and heavy industries.
