Kolkata, Jan 27 (NationPress) The parents of the woman doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, who tragically fell victim to a horrific rape and murder within the hospital grounds in August 2024, expressed on Monday their demand for accountability not only for the convicted individual, Sanjay Roy, but also for all others implicated in this heinous act.
The father of the victim stated that they are not currently pursuing capital punishment for Sanjay Roy. “We want the identities of everyone responsible for my daughter’s demise to be revealed. We seek the maximum punishment for all involved and not solely for Sanjay Roy. Therefore, we are not asking for the death penalty for Sanjay Roy at this moment. The specifics will be elaborated by our attorney,” asserted the victim’s father.
This statement came after the conclusion of hearings regarding the admissibility of two concurrent petitions from the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government seeking the death penalty for Sanjay Roy at a division bench of the Calcutta High Court.
The bench, comprising Justice Debangshu Basak and Justice Shabbar Rashidi, has reserved its judgement for now, meaning it remains uncertain whether both petitions—one from the CBI and another from the state government—will be accepted or if only one will proceed.
According to the legal representative of the victim’s parents, Shamim Ahmed, the court will exclusively rule on the petitions submitted by the CBI and the state. He noted that the victim's family has long been frustrated with the pace of the CBI's investigation.
“A special court in Kolkata recently expressed its own dissatisfaction with the investigation's progress. We continue to believe that the true masterminds behind this crime have yet to be identified, which is why we are not pursuing the harshest sentence for Sanjay Roy at this time,” he added.
Last week, a special court in Kolkata sentenced Sanjay Roy to life imprisonment. However, both the CBI and the state government have appealed to the Calcutta High Court to challenge this ruling and are advocating for the death penalty for the sole convict.
