Kolkata, Jan 27 (NationPress) The parents of the female junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, who was brutally raped and murdered on the hospital grounds, faced criticism from senior Trinamool Congress leaders on Monday regarding their stance on the proposed death penalty for the convict, Sanjay Roy, advocated by both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the West Bengal government.
Following a hearing at the Calcutta High Court regarding the acceptance of two concurrent petitions from the CBI and the West Bengal government seeking the death sentence for Sanjay Roy, the victim's father expressed their disinterest in pursuing the death penalty. Instead, they wish for further investigations to identify the main culprits behind the entire plot.
In response, Trinamool Congress state general secretary Kunal Ghosh remarked to reporters that the death penalty is the only fitting punishment for cases of rape and murder.
“In every instance of rape and murder, families of the victims typically demand the death penalty. Yet in the case of R.G. Kar, the victim's parents are opposing it. Who is influencing them? I have consistently stated that leftist and ultra-leftist groups are behind the victim's parents’ direction,” he asserted.
Ghosh further suggested that the victim’s parents are behaving like the “spokespersons” for these groups.
“The inconsistency in their statements deserves a separate investigation,” Ghosh added.
Kalyan Banerjee, a four-time Trinamool Congress Lok Sabha member and senior advocate at the Calcutta High Court, also criticized the victim’s parents.
“It is regrettable that the parents of the victim are engaging in politics. Their statements now align with those of CPI-M leaders,” Banerjee remarked.
