Kolkata, Jan 18 (NationPress) Just hours after a special court in Kolkata found civic volunteer Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a junior female doctor from the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital on Saturday, a fierce political battle has erupted across West Bengal.
Following the verdict, Trinamool Congress state general secretary Kunal Ghosh asserted that Roy's conviction validates the initial investigation conducted by the Kolkata Police.
"Certain individuals indulged in unwarranted accusations during this matter. Today, it has been established that they were disseminating falsehoods. The investigation carried out by the Kolkata Police was indeed on the right track. However, groups from the left, extreme left forces, and certain anti-Trinamool Congress factions along with some medical professionals attempted to mislead the public," he stated.
The investigation was later transferred to the CBI, but their findings also confirmed that the Kolkata Police were pursuing the inquiry correctly," Ghosh remarked.
On the other hand, BJP West Bengal chief and Union Minister of State Sukanta Majumdar expressed that uncertainties still linger regarding potential evidence tampering that may have occurred during the initial five days when the Kolkata Police managed the case.
"There are still doubts surrounding this matter. For now, Sanjay Roy has been convicted. If he is guilty, he merits the harshest penalty. However, had the appropriate evidence been present, the consequences might have been different," Majumdar asserted.
CPI(M) leader Sayandip Mitra stated that while the conviction of Roy for the heinous acts is warranted, it remains unclear who the true "masterminds" behind this larger conspiracy are that led Roy to commit such atrocities.
"Our demand now is for the identification of these masterminds," Mitra added.
Earlier, upon his conviction, Roy proclaimed his innocence within the courtroom.
"I have not committed any crime. Why are those truly responsible allowed to remain free? I am not guilty. A conspiracy has been orchestrated by many," Roy shouted.
The judge assured him that he would have the opportunity to speak on Monday prior to sentencing.
