Kolkata, Jan 18 (NationPress) Just hours after a special court in Kolkata declared civic volunteer Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a junior doctor at R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, the convict's elder sister has stated that they will not seek to challenge the verdict in any higher legal forum in the near future.
The special court is set to announce the sentence on Monday, which could range from the death penalty to life imprisonment.
Regardless of the outcome on Monday, the convict's family has made it clear they will not pursue any higher legal appeals, as Roy’s elder sister expressed during a media interaction on Saturday evening.
“We express our apologies to the victim’s family. The law has deemed my brother guilty, and he will face the appropriate consequences. I have no further comments. The authorities will act justly. Our wishes hold little significance,” claimed the victim’s elder sister. She also mentioned that she had been out of touch with her brother for an extended period.
“I was not very aware of his current situation,” she mentioned. On Monday, prior to the sentencing, Judge Anirban Das of the special court will hear closing statements from both Sanjay Roy and the victim's parents.
The trial commenced on November 11 last year, 59 days following the discovery of the victim’s body in a seminar hall at the R.G. Kar premises on the morning of August 9 last year. The conviction process concluded 162 days after the crime occurred.
While Sanjay Roy has been convicted of the rape and murder, the possibility of evidence tampering remains a concern.
