Kolkata, Jan 18 (NationPress) A special court in Kolkata on Saturday found civic volunteer Sanjay Roy guilty of the rape and murder of a junior female doctor from the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College & Hospital, which took place within the hospital premises in August of the previous year.

However, special court judge Anirban Das has set Monday for the announcement of the sentence.

Roy, recognized as the “sole prime accused” by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) in its sole charge sheet, has been convicted under Section 64 (punishment for rape), Section 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state of a victim) and Section 103(I) (punishment for murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Upon being convicted, Roy vociferously proclaimed his innocence, stating, “I have not done anything. Why were those who were truly responsible allowed to remain free? I am not guilty. A conspiracy has been orchestrated by many,” he exclaimed.

The judge assured him he would have the opportunity to speak on Monday prior to the sentencing.

The trial commenced on November 11 last year, 59 days after the lifeless body of the victim was discovered in a seminar hall within the R.G. Kar premises on the morning of August 9.

The conviction process was concluded 162 days following the occurrence of the crime.

While the conviction regarding the crime of rape and murder has been finalized, the aspect concerning evidence tampering remains unresolved.

According to sources, the CBI has already notified the special court that the possibility of filing a supplementary charge sheet regarding the tampering of evidence is still available, leaving this particular aspect of the case pending.

Last year, the controversial former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, and the former SHO of Tala Police Station, Abhijit Mondal, were granted “default bail” by the same special court, as the CBI failed to submit the supplementary charge sheet against them within 90 days of their arrest.

Both Ghosh and Mondal faced allegations of misleading the investigation and tampering with evidence while the initial probe was conducted by the Kolkata Police before the CBI assumed control post an order from the Calcutta High Court.

Roy, formerly a civic volunteer associated with Kolkata Police, was apprehended by the city police on August 10, just a day after the victim's body was found.
