Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) A special court in Kolkata is set to announce the sentence for civic volunteer Sanjay Roy, the only convicted individual in the horrific case involving the rape and murder of a female doctor associated with the state-run R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The remains of the victim were discovered within the hospital grounds in August 2024. Judge Anirban Das of the special court delivered a guilty verdict against Roy on January 18.

The court proceedings are scheduled to commence around noon, where the judge will permit both Roy and the victim's parents to present their final remarks. Following this, the judge will declare the sentence.

During the January 18 proceedings, the judge indicated that the most severe penalty could be the “death penalty”, while the least could be life imprisonment.

Despite the sentencing process concluding on Monday, investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) regarding potential evidence tampering will continue.

Sources from the CBI have disclosed that they are still considering filing an additional charge sheet concerning the evidence tampering aspect, with this investigation remaining unresolved.

Previously, the former principal of R.G. Kar, Sandip Ghosh, along with former SHO of Tala Police Station Abhijit Mondal, were granted “default bail” by the same special court, as the CBI did not submit the supplementary charge sheet within 90 days post their arrests.

Both Ghosh and Mondal face accusations of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence during the initial inquiry by the Kolkata Police, which was later taken over by the CBI on the orders of the Calcutta High Court.

The victim's body was located in the seminar hall of R.G. Kar on the morning of August 9 last year. The Kolkata Police initiated the initial investigation and arrested Roy, but five days later, the CBI took over the case and Roy was transferred to their custody.

The trial commenced on November 11 last year, 59 days after the victim's body was found. The conviction was finalized on January 18, marking 162 days since the crime occurred. The sentence will be delivered on Monday, precisely 164 days post-crime.
