Kolkata, Jan 20 (NationPress) Following the conclusion of the final statements from both the convict and the prosecutor in the R.G. Kar case involving the rape and murder of a female doctor, Judge Anirban Das of the special court is set to announce the sentence at 2.45 p.m.
After the proceedings wrapped up around 1.10 p.m., the judge ordered the immediate evacuation of the courtroom to prepare the final sentencing order.
During the 40-minute hearing, Sanjay Roy, the only defendant in the case and a former civic volunteer linked to the state police, maintained his innocence.
He alleged that he was physically assaulted and coerced into signing a confession.
Conversely, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) lawyer argued that Roy's crime is categorized as one of the “rarest of rare crimes,” advocating for the maximum penalty of death.
On January 18, the judge indicated that the possible maximum sentence could be death, while the minimum could be life imprisonment.
The victim's body was discovered in the seminar hall of the R.G. Kar premises on the morning of August 9 the previous year.
The initial inquiry was conducted by a special investigation team from the Kolkata Police, which led to Roy's arrest. However, the CBI took over the investigation five days after the incident following a Calcutta High Court order, leading to Roy's transfer to the central agency.
The trial commenced on November 11, 59 days post the victim's body discovery, culminating in a conviction on January 18. The final sentence is expected to be delivered at 2.45 p.m. on Monday, precisely 164 days after the crime.
